In Greene County district court Tony Lynn Hatting, 45, of Scranton was granted a deferred judgment Nov.20 after he pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse assault- simple, amended from domestic abuse assault- serious. He was placed on informal probation for one year and must complete the Iowa domestic abuse program at his own expense. He must pay a $65 civil penalty and a $100 domestic abuse surcharge. Jon Richard Harvey, 41, of Lake George, MN, was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- second offense, amended from OWI- third offense. All but seven days of the prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. He must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation he has already undergone, and he must complete a community college drinking drivers school. Harvey was fined $1,875 with a $656.25 surcharge. Court costs were $200. According to court records, since 2004 Harvey has been charged with OWI seven times in Minnesota and once in Nebraska. Hayley Lynn Brown, 25, of Jefferson was sentenced Nov. 20 two five years in prison (concurrent) on two separate charges – theft- second degree and possession of a firearm as a felon. The prison terms were suspended and she was placed on probation for three years. On each of those charges she was fined $750 with a $262.50 surcharge. A $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge was imposed on the theft judgment. On a charge of criminal mischief- fourth degree in the same case, Brown was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge and a $125 LEI surcharge. She must also pay $500 victim restitution. The fines and surcharges were suspended and the judge ruled she is unable to pay restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees. Charges in that case of burglary- third degree and unlawful possession of prescription drug were dismissed. Court costs were $2,150.94.
Brown was sentenced to two days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of OWI- first offense. She must complete a community college drinking drivers school. She was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge and a $10 drug abuse resistance education (DARE) surcharge, as well as $600 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $850.75.
In a third case Brown was sentenced to two days in jail (concurrent) after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. She was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge, a $10 DARE surcharge and a $125 LEI surcharge. Court costs were $285.75.

Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignment as follows: Robert Christopher Jean Thoma Jr, 20,of Jefferson, possession of methamphetamine- second offense and possession of marijuana- third or subsequent offense; Katelynn Jean Fees, 21, of Jamaica, possession of marijuana- first offense; Thomas Edward Young Jr, 43, of Grand Junction, domestic abuse assault causing injury; Jacob Mark Spaulding, 27, of Scranton, domestic abuse assault causing injury; and Brad Lee Byerly, 50, of Jefferson, OWI- second offense. Trial dates were set for Jan. 15 for Fees and Young, and for Jan. 29 for Thoma, Spaulding and Byerly.
Cases were initiated in district court as follows: Emma Michelle Webb, 18, of Anita, possession of marijuana- first offense; Rodney Dean Halterman, 18, of Grand Junction, drug distribution violation to person younger than 18 years; Mark Christopher Frohwein, 21, of Churdan, possession of marijuana- first offense; and Christopher Richard Sowers, 46, of Grand Junction, possession of methamphetamine- second offense and driving while license barred.
